PERFECTING A WELL KNOWN PHYSICAL PHENOMENON

When you think about it it’s obvious. Heat build up and muscle trauma are the enemy of all athletes. Medical science has prescribed ice as a well proven remedy for muscle and tissue damage for more than 100 years. You see it used today at most football matches.

Now, thanks to the work of dedicated sports scientists, especially those at The Australian Institute of Sport, we know that athletes can gain much more than effective tissue repair from deep cooling if it’s applied correctly. With the accurate application of whole body cooling therapy they can achieve significant extra endurance. In a world where every second counts that’s a major advantage.

PRE COOLING BEFORE THE RACE OR GAME CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

It has been well demonstrated that a pre cooled body can absorb more of the heat generated by physical activity and hostile environments. This can delay the onset of dangerous over heating by a very worthwhile amount before you hit that “brick wall”. Even adding the capability of a few more minutes of peak performance can make all the difference in many sports.

Pre cooling has also been demonstrated to significantly increase short to medium term endurance by lowering blood flow in the skin, in favour of increased muscle blood perfusion and muscle oxygen supply. A pre cooled body can safely absorb more heat and therefore lessen the strain on the metabolic and cardiovascular system.

There’s no magic, it’s the body’s natural response to surface tissue cooling at the correct temperature.

Racing car drivers, rally motorcyclists and others who have to perform in very hot environments are making more and more use of this pre body cooling protocol with great success, but it applies equally to most high exertion and endurance sports.

PLANNED REGULAR RECOVERY SESSIONS

In recent years planned ice bath recovery sessions have become widely accepted as an essential addition to serious sport and fitness training. Basically, the science behind the idea is that briefly immersing an athlete in cold water causes the bodies natural feedback systems to respond by dramatically reducing surface blood flow from the skin, soft tissues and muscles. Your body does this immediately to protect your vital core temperature from dropping dangerously low.

The withdrawal of a higher percentage of blood to the bodies core means more blood passes through the inner organs and in particular those organs that remove toxins from the blood stream. Although removal of toxins from exercise is a normal process it can take quite a lot of time and that’s why you feel the effects of exhaustion for up to several hours.

Using the body’s normal limbic system response to cold in short bursts, interspersed with a brief warm up activity causes a sort of pumping action that drives significantly more blood flow between the outer soft tissue and the inner organs than would otherwise occur if the body was warm or hot. This can greatly accelerate this normal blood cleansing activity and the athlete feels very much better, much quicker.

For reasons still being widely studied but as yet unclear, in addition to faster recovery from extreme exertion, most athletes report a genuine increase in overall fitness and increased long term endurance. Significantly almost all report a feeling of increased well-being.

This was particularly well summed up by the following quote from Bob Stapleton, a widely respected team manager in The Tour De France, speaking on TV in Europe, “This regeneration process with the iCools, it’s a proven winner , it’s scientifically proven and it has great acceptance with the athletes. In addition to the benefits of the regeneration process, the athletes feel much better , sleep better , lower their body temperatures and they just feel more comfortable.”

REDUCING THE SEVERITY OF INJURIES AND SPEEDING RECOVERY

Doctors and sports professionals have used ice packs to reduce the trauma in soft tissue injuries for decades. The iCool system can accurately produce temperatures at which surface blood vessels quickly narrow and blood moves away from the surface and towards the body’s core. As mentioned, this is the body’s normal defensive reaction to heat loss but it has the benefit of decreasing the metabolic rate in damaged muscles and joints and thereby quickly reducing inflammation. Essentially, the correct use of modern ice bath technology can greatly extend
the benefits normally attributed to ice pack application in the field, but with more controlled and enduring results. Many sports therapists around the world use iCools to aid in ensuring fast recovery for their athletes and to shorten the time taken to return after injury.

MID RACE OR GAME RECOVERY SESSIONS

This is a new area that is quickly gaining in popularity. It takes only a few minutes to rapidly reduce heat stress which naturally has important beneficial effects on endurance and concentration for the remainder of the physical stress period. It can prepare the body to tolerate more heat than would otherwise be possible by just resting. Athletes feel calmer, cooler, more alert and therefore psychologically better equipped to continue. This is especially beneficial where the athletes need to perform in high temperatures.

QUICK RELIEF AT THE END OF THE RACE OR GAME

An ice bath at the correct temperature has been well demonstrated to quickly relieve the extreme stress and pain often experienced at the end of an event, especially in warm weather. Naturally this requires a higher temperature to avoid cooling the athlete too rapidly, nevertheless the iCools are ideal for this purpose as they can provide large amounts of cooled water to calm and cool many athletes at once.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME AND TEMPERATURE

This is what the modern iCools are all about. Although the application of chilled water is key to all these benefits, it can not work well unless the temperatures and times are accurately controlled. The modern iCools can quickly provide all the chilled (or heated) water you need at the exact temperatures recommended by the experts. This is not possible using ice. These are the third generation of the highly respected iCools that have been used by thousands of athletes in a large number of major sporting events around the world and by a rapidly growing number of local and national clubs and sports training specialists in many countries. Considerable advances have been made as a result of applying to our research the extensive feedback we receive from world wide users of our earlier systems. Our new models are lighter, smaller and more powerful and have several important new features and our perfectly sized and shaped mobile pools are tougher than ever and faster and easier to set up.

SAFETY

All Models have a built in ‘residual earth leakage’ electrical safety system that cuts the flow of electricity instantly if a fault consistent with electric shock is detected. In addition the high quality water pumps are separated from their motors by a magnetic coupling through an insulating barrier that prevents water from ever coming into contact with the motor wiring. The flow of water is constantly monitored and the system shuts down if water is not detected. No electrical fittings, not even low voltage sensors come in direct contact with the water and the cooling evaporator tank is fully earthed, as is the entire mechanical system and everything is protected by modern circuit breakers. All controls can be ‘locked’ by deactivating the touch screen to prevent unauthorised tampering. Control of most electrical systems can be over ridden by the user for emergency use in the event of a computer failure.
